Construction

Several design elements are critical to ensuring medium-voltage cables prevent charge accumulation and unintentional discharge. At the core is an aluminum or copper conductor, encased by a conductor shield made of semiconductive material. This shielded conductor is insulated with robust materials such as cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), chosen for its excellent resistance to chemicals, oil, and water, as well as its exceptional mechanical strength, which safeguards the conductor in demanding conditions.  

The insulation is typically paired with an additional shielding layer, often a metallic tape or braid, to provide enhanced protection in the event of a fault. Finally, the cable is enclosed in an outer jacket, also frequently made of XLPE or similar materials, designed to meet various environmental, application-specific, and cost requirements.  

Thanks to advancements in insulation and jacket technologies, some cable designs eliminate the insulation shield, classifying them as non-shielded cables, while still retaining the conductor shield for essential protection.
