Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced Overhead Cable
Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR) cable is a high-capacity, high-strength stranded conductor commonly used in overhead power lines. It serves as a bare overhead transmission conductor and is also used for primary and secondary distribution, providing reliable and efficient power delivery.
The outer strands of the ACSR cable are made of aluminum due to its excellent conductivity, light weight, and low cost. The center strands are made of steel, which has the strength needed to support the weight and will not stretch due to the ductility of aluminum. This gives the cable an overall high tensile strength.
The ACSR construction uses aluminum alloy 1350-H19 wires, concentrically stranded on a steel core. The cores of the ACSR are available in A, B, or C grade galvanized, aluminum coated (AZ), or aluminum clad steel (AL). Additional corrosion protection can be obtained by applying grease to the cores or injecting grease throughout the cable.
The steel core has a higher resistance, but has no effect on power transmission because it is located well below the skin depth and essentially no AC current flows.
The light weight and high electrical conductivity of aluminum combined with the high tensile strength of steel provide a good strength-to-weight ratio, making ACSR conductors the preferred choice for overhead transmission and distribution projects.
